Married v. Single

Today, May 6th I have been married for as many years as I was single - 19. I was married to Bradley C. Harr on this day in 1989 - my 19th birthday. I had many people give me a rough time for getting married on my birthday, but I just responded that I was getting my dream come true for my birthday! That is what Bradly is to me - my dream come true! We were married in the morning of May 6th, 1989 in the Salt Lake Temple. We held our Wedding Celebration with family a few nights prior at the Sizzler Stake House - choice of the Harr's.

At the strike of midnight on May 6th, 1989, it was my 19th birthday. As a wedding/birthday gift, Brad bought a new mountian bike for me. He came tapping on my basement bedroom window after midnight that night, only to find me not there. I was two stories up - in Heidi's room hemming blue floral bridesmaid dresses for that day. I had ridden a bike often, but had never had a good bike like the one Brad gave me that night. When he left early that morning, he said he would pick me up in a few hours to go to the temple. I remember being up very late, and then waking up about 4:00 a.m. to be ready for the special day! I was all ready, and I remember the phone ringing very early. One of my parents got the phone, and I didn't think anything of it. Then a little bit later, my Dad came in and teased that he was betting that Brad would not show up to pick me up! I waited and waited, and finally asked who had called. My Dad didn't know, but said that I had better call and find out if he was coming or what. I called Brad's house, and no one answered. They had left me! My Dad laughed that he had won the bet, and we loaded in the car racing for the appointment at the temple! When we arrived at the temple, Brad was indeed there. I was grateful he had not stood me up completely. He claimed that my Dad had called and told his Dad that we would just meet at the temple. That wasn't what my family had understood - whatever. I was grateful to be there.

I remember after the rush of getting to the temple, dressing in my wedding gown, and putting on my temple clothing, being taken to the Celestial Room with Brad. There we were told to sit and wait. We waited there for more than an hour. It was a long time! I don't remember much about the sealers words to us (unfortunately) other than that he counseled us that in marriage we should strive to shrink the triangle between us - between Brad and I and God. He said that has we each grew closer to God, the distance/differences between Brad and I would also shorten.

After our beautiful ceremony with Farmor, Grandma Orla & Grandpa Chris, Grandma Mary & Grandpa Harold, in the temple, we went outside for family pictures. I didn't get a professional photographer - but rather a family member had been asked to take pictures. We took tons, but didn't ever get any printed. To this day I don't have a wedding picture framed. Anyway, I remember being outside, my Mom was so worried about my dress dragging on the ground. My little brother Tye, followed me everywhere, carrying my dress! He was so darling! I love you Tye!

Before we left downtown, Gary & Debbie gave us a gift of a ride in a horse drawn buggy around temple square. I was concerned about all the preparations happening at home for the reception that night, I don't remember much of the ride.

Our reception was held in our backyard at 2580 Fox Hunt Drive. Brad had helped my Dad put in a rock wall around the scrub oak, we planted flowers, and worked in the yard from February until May trying to prepare for this day. I absolutely didn't want a reception line. However, before I knew it, I found myself standing in line in the living room with Brad's parents by our side and a line out the door.

That day, the important part was the temple ceremony. That is not what I remember. I hope that for my kids, I can allow them to plan their own special day, and I will encourage them to make it their day! My siblings have each chosen to not hold the reception on the same day that they are married. I think this is smart.

I am so grateful to be married to Bradley! He is a wonderful Father, husband, and friend!

I am also grateful for my good parents, who brought me into the world on this same day some 19 years earlier! I am thankful for their sacrifices, their love, their understanding, their testimony's. I love you Mom & Dad! Thank you!
