My kids love a book about the Bear Family who want to go for a picnic. The Daddy Bear claims to know just where to go, and how to get there the best way. In the book he is foolish, and doesn't follow Boy Scouting rules at all, failing in his attempt to show his knowledge.
This was not the case on our picnic on Friday! For sometime B. has wanted to rent snowmobiles and go with his parents for a day. So we were in town, we had all the snow clothes for everyone, we did it! We rented five sleds in Heber early on Friday morning and headed to Strawberry resevoir! It was an overcast day as a storm moved closer; that didn't deter us.
When I was a little girl, we owned snowmobiles. At first we had just one, and my Dad would drive "bertha" we called her; pulling a sled in which we would pile all five kids, and lunch. One could stand on the back, but it was required that the back "sled driver" had to lean into the turns, helping it to not tip over on the sloped corners and side hills. I don't remember how many rode on the snowmobile with Dad but I am sure it was at least three on the seat up there. I usually got the steering of the sled. Mom was often sitting in the sled, holding a little one. (Thank you Mom!) I have fond memories of finding a grove a trees way out in the wilderness, and my Dad being the great Boy Scout that he is would build a ONE match fire (with a flare!). I remember he would cut willows for us and we would roast hot dogs sometimes, and other times, we just used the fire to warm our hands and bums by as we ate sandwiches we had previously made at home.
We did a repeat of this wonderful experience for my kids on Friday! Only problem was my Dad wasn't there! We took B&JH with us. It was a beautiful day! I loved the camp fire in the snow right on the top of a hill (not the most out of the wind place but it worked!). I loved watching my boys deviating from the road and finding their own road off the beaten path! They know how to think outside the box, and find a beautiful new way! Thank you B for a beautiful day!
The kids say their favorite part was the last hour. We had returned to the cars, and B&JH left they were done. My kids weren't done! I stayed in the car with the little girls and J. and they went back out. They came back laughing about Sam face planting it over the back and belly laughing till they were crying! They loved climbing through the trees to the mountain tops! I have fond memories of being together in the hills with just my family! I am grateful to create those memories now with my own family! I am grateful for a Papa Bear who knows how to make it a good time! Thanks B!
This week has certainly been full of memorable treasures I am so grateful for!
