How many pinewood derby cars should one Mom have to facilitate? I don't really want to count, I just hope that they keep getting better!
This year Sam and I started on it early. We didn't want to get caught worried about Dad finishing his part on the day of the race again (like last year!). We got it cut out, went shopping for the perfect color paint, stickers, weights, etc. We got it all assembled, and then... life happened! Somehow time slipped one day at a time slowly away out of sight! Before we knew it, Thursday night was here, and a special Cub Master was calling saying that it was time for them to lock the cars up in the impound to be raced the next day! I was in a meeting about... don't remember when S called in a panic! B helped him that night, and they waived the mandatory pre-check-in for us once again! Together B and S got the wheels sanded, axles ground, holes drilled straight, etc. etc. Then we had to deal with the weight issue. We were a whole ounce under! With a quick google search, I found something about Tungsten powder available at golf shops. This meant we had to wait until race day (horrors!) to finish weighting the car once again! We were up late into the night getting the wheels on, straight, checking and rechecking! Sam was so excited!
Friday B found Tungsten powder and drilled holes right in the top ("Dad, What are you doing to my paint job?" S was very worried!). We got checked in, and in fact showed up early to help decorate for the big event! G&G Harr are in town so they came along. S's car did... GREAT! He placed right in there every race, and was all smiles!

We didn't win 1st, 2nd or 3rd this year. However S did win "Most Unique" awarded by vote of the people, and "Most Sporty" determined by the Pack leaders. He got a "Golden ticket" to take his car to the car show happening at the Dixie Center in conjunction with the Scout Expo coming April 25th. Fun! Most of all I am proud of S for not giving up after a disaster last year! I am thankful for his happy smile, his willing attitude, and his constant help! I love you Super S! xoxoxo
The final race at the Pinewood Derby this year was supposed to be for the Dad's. However J and C found out about it, and grabbed their old cars off the dusty shelves in their rooms! C was accused of not weighing in, however others attested to the fact that he did. It was so fun to see them seriously race against each other! There were 3 cars/heat, and it was fun to have them neck and neck together, often 'smoking' the poor third car! C was asked what magic juice he was using, expecting a reply of "graphite" but rather C responded "Dust!"

C took 1st place in the Dad's heat which is funny because the car he was racing didn't do so well when he originally raced it! :) The beauty of time! H.F. thanks for the magic of this time with my Family! They are The BEST!
