How to Heal?

B was operated on Wednesday, tonight is Saturday. We both thought going into surgery that when the Dr. office said that he would be out of the office for five days, that meant that he would feel better in a couple, and then work up to feeling back up to par by the 5th day. That would imply, at least it did in my finite mind that he would start feeling better Friday, Saturday.... so that by Monday he would be feeling like he was back to functioning again! Well, today he woke up not feeling any better than he did on Thursday morning, the day after surgery, even before we went in to have the packing removed. He is totally congested... I mean really! He constantly has red mounds coming from his nose. He has had a moustache of gauze on his face since he came out of surgery, and it has to be changed every couple of hours because it is full of blood. The 'brace' that they put on his nose was crooked before we left the hospital, in fact they called Dr. D back to the hospital because it was popping off. He said not to worry, that he would take it off and straighten it the next morning at his office. He said he could still bend it around then. Well, the next morning, he stuck some instrument under it, trying to remove it, and couldn't get it off. After really prying at it, he gave up and said he was just going to leave it. Then he said something about we can "usually" do this in just one surgery, but sometimes it takes two.... can I help you - NO! We won't be going through this again! B went into the hospital feeling pretty good. I almost had his cut on the top healed, I had been putting vitamin E on it for a couple of days, and it was looking pretty good. He joked that he was just going to ride his bike in to the surgery center and then I could load it in the truck later when I came to get him. He really did feel good!

He didn't come out feeling so good! I wrote as I waited for him... that was another story. Dr. D. told me to be sure I was back to the hospital in 40 minutes because he would come out and report on how it went. I raced home to get my phone charger, and hurried back in to be there in 30 minutes just so I would be sure not to miss him. I waited, and waited... an hour then an hour 20 minutes, an hour 40 minutes... finally at about 2 hours, he came out. He said "everything went fine. No surprises," and that "he felt good about it." I was pretty worried since it took so much longer. The nurses assured me that I must have misheard that he said 40 minutes because it always takes about 2 hours. Whatever, I was grateful that he was ok.

It wasn't long before they asked me to come help him... he "wasn't happy" and needed help going to the bathroom. I hurried in to find him upset!!! Normally they leave him in recovery for an hour, but because he insisted he needed to go, they moved him after only 20 minutes. He really did need another hour to calm down! I don't know how people act when they are out, but when they are coming out from under the drugs, they aren't happy!

The nurses in the recovery area were fabulous! They said that this surgery is the HARDEST to recover from. Great! I wish I had known that before we went into surgery! B did ask Dr. D about not doing the other parts of the surgery on the sinuses as he went in, but left it that he was the Dr. and whatever he decided would be great. I don't agree!

Today he is still bleeding quite heavily. B has been trying to get by on just one pain killer at a time, but it hasn't been working (guessing based on how grumpy he has been!) He is very awesome, but this is not the man I know! I don't know if this is what old age looks like, then I want to quit now!

How can he heal? I wish he had a priesthood blessing this week. He did get one on the bus last week, but his surgery was this week. I can pray for those same blessings. There is something just so powerful when it comes with hands on your head. I am grateful for the power of the priesthood in my home!
