Today I went with J back to LV for basketball games in another tournament with the Hoops 24/7 team. After the game he was offered a full ride scholarship to Houghton College, a Christian College in New York. He is pretty excited! We have all been talking about where he should go, what he should do for next year. We have considered sending him far from home, and agreed last week that it would be a good opportunity for him to go back East for this one year before his mission. We have struggled, because we hate to let him go away from home at all.... this is the same little boy I have homeschooled since he was five because I couldn't put him on the bus to be away from me for eight hours every single day! Now I am considering sending him 2400 miles away?
We recognize this is a direct answer to our prayers. I determined to just pray that the right coaches would be in the right gym at the right time to see him play, and somehow connect with us to make him an offer. I have asked that it be a clean, good school, and considered strongly staying in the state of Utah with some hesitation due to the opportunity it could be if he is willing to go far away. This is a christian school, that might prove good for his preparation to serve a mission! This is a smaller school, in upstate NY right where my Dad served his mission! Wow, small world! I understand they have two stop lights in little Star Lake, NY. So amazing! Tonight I think J feels great about it. B is saying he can only see one down side, that is being so far away, but that promises a Christmas we will all remember if we get to go to NY for Christmas to see J! The trade offs for getting a full ride scholarship would save money to pay for the airfare back and forth.
Before we could get home from LV tonight, the most wonderful C.C. brought yellow and purple balloons and tied them to the door with notes all over that read: "Way to Go Jed!" With the Houghton College banner in the middle of the page. She is soooo amazing and good to us! I am so grateful to have her close to share excitements and fears together!
It was just yesterday afternoon that J was headed to a fireside at the college. On his way, he saw two ladies broke down on the side of the freeway with their little ones there hot and miserable. J went to help them, and together they determined he would pull them off the freeway and back to WalMart so they could call a truck but in the meantime get their kids off the freeway. J hooked his tow rope on, and began towing them down the freeway when the lady in the van didn't know what she was doing, and passed J. This pulled his car sideways in the middle of the freeway, and then hitting their side door, he was going down the road backwards! He called me in a panic, "Mom I've been in an accident. I am ok and the Jeep is ok. I've got to go... Bye!" I paniced, just as B walked in the door from the stake offices. I told him the very little I knew, and he called J to learn that he was headed south bound on I-15. We all jumped into the rig, and headed to the freeway. The officers instructed J not to have anyone else come, they had so many people on site, they didn't want anyone else. We went, but only B got out of the car on the freeway. Just as he got out, B's cell phone rang, I answered to find D.C. on the line asking "Are you ok?" to which I explained the little I knew. I told him to head home, but he didn't. He was on his way home from his Navy duty, and saw J on the side of the road. They had a fire truck, like four highway patrol cars, and an ambulance passed him on their way to J's jeep and this other car. I was so grateful to learn that there was a little property damage to their van, however J's big tires just bounced them off, not leaving any damage on the side of the road. They are such an amazing family! Thank you for help us in the office, and in life! We appreciate you C family!!!! It wasn't long after that J.H. called, our fabulous Dr. neighbor, and home teacher, called to check on us as well! I am so grateful for good people!
