Success!

What is the definition of success?

For me this year it was a 4:30 marathon! I am amazed that when we set a goal, pray for success, and then with hard work we put forth our best efforts to make those goals to come to pass, they do!!!! Yea!

Having said that, I wonder if I should challenge myself more. I set the goal to get a 4:30, and made it exactly! Could I have finished in 4:20 if that had been my goal instead? Do I sell myself short just because I don't raise my expectations. Wow, food for thought!

This weekend we hosted a darling boutique in the office. My super talented Sister K filled her van and my parents truck and invited several others to come for a race & holiday gift show Thursday, Friday and Saturday. At the beginning of the show I asked what success meant to each of the vendors there setting up for the weekend. Some didn't have high hopes of this effort being much of anything. Others had high hopes of making a little cash, and enjoying a weekend here in St. George. Unfortunately, they ended up spending most of their time inside the boutique, with not much traffic at all. It started as an endurance of disasters as other tenants on the corner didn't like them there, and took the banners down we put up late Thursday night. Not long after resolving the banner problem, and being threatened if we put the banner on a car and parked it in the parking lot that they would have it towed away. Honestly - some people are sooo awry! The world is too small to have people like that around. I don't know what was wrong with that guy, but I'll tell you what I won't do business with him ever! Beware of the ERA Realtors. After B worked out that problem, and found a way around that man we believe he was more furious, and called the City of St. George to have them come shut it down. It is true that we don't have a retail business license, but we do have a business license, and I didn't know better - honest. Anyway, by that time I had gone with B to Cedar to watch C compete in a cross country invitational meet. He set a new personal record running 3 miles in 20:25! Great job C! I wish I could run a 6:40 mile - even one I would be happy, but three back to back really close to that! Wow! While we were in Cedar, K dealt with the police, and filed a temporary business license, jumping through all the hoops! Wow! All over a endeavor to make $1000 if they were lucky! They spend $300 printing cards that we allowed them to put as our flier in the marathon bags - which they ran out of before 6:00 that night - they were supposed to be open and ready for runners until 9! Not great! It was one storm after another! K has such a good attitude - she said that this was the storm, and that after the storm, there is always a rainbow! She had a great attitude, and I hope it turns out good for her! She did pass out quite a few business cards to people who said they didn't have room to pack her cute boards, but that they would call her, and have her ship them to her. I bought really cute decorations for my home and office, and cute bags from A! I believe the original goals they outlined that first day were all met, although after the fees of the city, I hope it covered the increase. I don't really know. I know they had lots of cute stuff.

In Priesthood Session of conference, I understand Pres Uchtdorf talked about work and education. On Thursday when I asked and the one said she didn't expect much, we talked about some of the other activities which could be done to stir up business. K had an extra 1000 fliers printed. I encouraged all vendors to take some time to stop by parking lots and put them on the cars. These are the same fliers that my family has taped to our frisbees for the last two weekends, and thrown in parades - sharing 300 of the 1000 there. Then I took my little kids, and we did four large parking lots on Friday early morning. However, those were the only fliers that were distributed of the 1000. K was busy appeasing the city and the sign problems, she put together the entire event for all those vendors! There were at least five that sent their wares, but didn't come. There were only four that came including K. In my opinion she pulled it off for everyone. It was a lot of work. My cute cousin A was a great help to K! It was fun to have her here for a couple of days. She was busy with K holding the fort down at the boutique. President Uchtdorf said you have to be willing to put in the work to make something happen. I testify that I know this is true. I worked hard to run a PR on my marathon, and it came to pass. I am grateful that I did. I also know however, that our enemy would have us spend so much time training for athletic events that we miss the most important events in life - time with our family. I don't believe in thousands of hours of training. I believe in living life, and working hard. It pays!
