The Rescue

B is assigned to speak this month for High Council on "The Rescue." I have been thinking about it for a few days now. Amazed at how often a "rescue" is necessary! I rescue my little ones when they fall down and get hurt, hugging, consoling them to feel better. A few weeks ago when L taught YW, she made the spider web and talked about jobs around the house, and every one's responsibility in the home to help. She had a big beach ball, and after the web was sufficiently strong, she put the ball on the top of the web, and talked about how many projects the family could take on if everyone was willing to help and hold their part. Together they bounced the ball on the web, showing the strength of the family. Then she let go, and talked about all it took was for one person to drop their strings in the web, and it would destroy the entire makeup of the web. She dropped her strings, but the leader standing next to her, tried to grab the strings, rescuing the rest of the web from certain disaster. We talked about as parents how we want to save our kids, protecting, rescuing them from the consequences of their choices, but how ultimately we can't rescue them. There is only one who can rescue... that is The Savior!

Many examples of rescues in the scriptures:
Abraham and Issac
Nephi and family in the wilderness
Moses and the Children of Israel
Jonah
Ammon rescuing the king's servants by protecting the sheep

Many forms of rescue. I have enjoyed rereading Elder Bednar's talk on Tender Mercies, considering the many times daily the Holy Spirit rescues me!

I particularly loved this line from this talk: "As you and I face challenges and tests in our lives, the gift of faith and an appropriate sense of personal confidence that reaches beyond our own capacity are two examples of the tender mercies of the Lord."

B challenged the audience today (he spoke today, and will again next Sunday, same topic, in a different ward) to consider what stage they are at right now in their life; one in need of rescue, one preparing to rescue, or one ready and currently engaged in rescuing? Recognizing we are all in need of being rescued by the Savior; we hope to play the role of helping to rescue others here in this life as well. I think this is what Alma was speaking of in Alma 5:26 "And now behold, I say unto you, my brethren, if ye have experienced a change of heart, and if ye have felt to sing the song of redeeming love, I would ask, can ye feel so now?" It is what is referred to in the YW theme and Mosiah 18:9 when it says that we desire "to stand as witnesses of God at all times and in all things, and in all places." I desire to be ready, worthy, willing, and in tune to help others, even to rescue! I want to be in tune myself to hear the promptings, and to constantly feel the strains of the song of redeeming love, even the tender mercy promptings directing me through life.

Interesting thoughts. I am tired, will continue another day.

Today was the Spring Ahead, Daylight Savings time adjustment, my internal clock has been a mess for a couple of weeks. B had 7:00 HC meetings this morning, which felt like 6. This will be a busy week, and it is late Sunday already!

Ready, willing and able to Rescue... am I?
