Why Scout?

Last year when little S was born, I stepped away from Cubbing completely and simply needed a break! I have been involved in scouting since moving to Tennessee in 1996. In recent years I am not sure why, but my scouting involvement has not been in the trenches with the boys, but on a District level. Sometime this spring, I had occasion to see R.S., District Chairman, and he mentioned that they had not yet been able to fill my vacated spot. With summer months quickly approaching, I couldn't help but see the need to provide District activities for Cub Scouts in our District! And so....

This past week S and I have been at the Southern Utah Shooting Sports Park early three mornings to meet and assist the trained volunteers willing to help these young boys learn the joy of B-b guns and Archery. I scout to rub shoulders with good people, and to help boys! This week has been full of those experiences! Sessions were held Monday, Tuesday and Thursday at 7:00 and 8:30 a.m.. wrapping up by 10:00 a.m.. The weather has been graciously tempered once again on each of these days by my loving Heavenly Father who has so kindly heard and answered prayers! We have worked beside fabulous volunteers who are trained in safety to provide these opportunities for these young boys. We have two more days, this coming Monday and Tuesday. By the end, we will have had some four hundred Cubs participate! Safety has been first priority, and I am grateful to report that we have not had any accidents, praying that blessing will continue!

I know why I enjoy scouting. The pure joy of a Cub when he hits the target and finds success. When he realizes that he can is powerful! How often do we not understand the rules enough to find success? How often do we need a trained friend to say, slide up, aim carefully, change and practice this technique. Oh if we could only be in tune with the Holy Spirit more often to allow Him to teach and mold us as these boys are molded and helped by these fabulous volunteers! I am thankful for the blessings of heaven, for the assistance of my kids as we serve together, and for the opportunity to do something for others! My kids are wonderful as they jump in to help - volunteers commented about S one day this week that he "always stays ahead of the plane!" I agree! He has learned well to see a need, and jump to help! The little girls have been needed here at home to tend and care for little S and J, and have done a marvelous job! This week L and C are at EFY in Hawaii. They will be gone until next Thursday, missing completely this service opportunity. It has been good for my Jr. team to step up the plate and serve! Thanks team!
