"Scary, Scary, Scary!"

"Scary, Scary, Scary!" That's what little S said two weeks ago when we snuck away finally about 7 for a little trip in the canoes. We live about 25 minutes from a beautiful, quiet lake.  It is so little in fact that this time of year (although we have beautiful weather) they only open the boat ramp on the weekends and then it closes promptly at 7 even if it's not yet dark, just because it's so small.  We love it!  It's small and quiet, and perfect for a little canoe trip!

My team at home now includes three boys and three girls under the age of 13.  C is still here at home, but well, he's a high school senior taking his classes at the local college, and you know how they are, just not home much!  It's ok.  I love the time he comes home, and I love checking up on him daily, even if it means after 10:30 at night!  He's up to good things, and I adore him!

So my current "fun time team" is young.  It will be several years again before I have a driver!  (Ugh! Oh well! I'll enjoy it while it lasts!)

We decided we wanted to go for a canoe ride, and well, it was getting dark about 7:45 p.m. so we knew we didn't have much time!  It was so fun!  We had been enjoying a full harvest moon, but not that night! We had clear skies, but that Mr. Moon decided to play scary games on us!  He didn't come out to play!  We launched our canoes, and headed out in the dusk as the beautiful sun was still sitting on the top of the horizon.  All to quickly it dropped down below that line, and the colors on the eastern red cliffs were beautiful!  Sorry I didn't take my phone or camera, you see part of the fun of this adventure is the possibility that we might be swimming!  Have you ever been in a canoe with a two year old?  It is sooo fun to see my kids in their own canoe paddling, independent, brave! I love them!  Canoe #1 made it out, and they were headed across the lake.  I was in the second canoe with the littlest ones.  Life jackets on, paddles in, we headed out.

Quickly it turned darker and darker.  Looking back to the shore we launched from, we were grateful for two campsites that had fires going so we could see through the darkness where to return to!

It was a night not to be forgotten as little S was so cute and needed a cuddle as we paddled in the stillness and watched the last rays of sunlight, then the pink wispy clouds, then the shadows, and then the stars began to appear.

Just a couple weeks prior we took this same journey, while the days were still a bit longer. The kids paddled to the other side, and that night they were brave enough to find a few cliffs to jump from.  J & C took dates here with picnics in August while they were home together.  We expected them back just after dark, but they ended up staying until about 10 enjoying the evening on the stillness of this beautiful lake.

This past Saturday, our day had been full of other great events, including a trip to look at a houseboat, scouting meetings, trips to the hardware store, and home cleaning projects.  We were all ready for a change, and a trip to Gunlock was suggested.  The independence, challenge, and adventure of a trip there is somehow peaceful and yet challenging and even "Scary, scary, scary!"  Off we went!

Saturday's trip ended with one canoe wet!  They can't even explain what happened, but all the sudden they were all swimming.  We laughed that it was the canoe with the best paddlers.  They had made it clear down to see the swans at the end of the lake, and were just about back in the stillness when all the sudden, we heard squills of cold!  They are so cute!  Yep, B we'll remember that trip as the one you went in!  Thanks for another beautiful memory!
