Scouts and Scouters,
It is not a coincidence that this Sunday is Scout Sunday! We need to make it a special Scout Sunday in which we do our Duty to God!
I understand that on Monday, January 28th, the National Leadership of the Boy Scouts of America announced through local and national media and through conference calls with the council level professionals and volunteers that they will be revisiting its Membership Standards Policy regarding Sexual Orientation during their National Meeting next Wednesday, February 6th, 2013.
I understand that this is a sensitive issue and is causing emotional distress with many in our country. They are considering removing the national membership restriction regarding sexual orientation. This would mean there would no longer be any national policy regarding sexual orientation of adults or youth. Chartered Organizations would then be responsible for accepting youth membership and selecting leadership consistent with each organization's mission, principals or religious beliefs. BSA members and parents would be able to choose a local unit that best meets the needs of their families.
Great Salt Lake Council has asked that all of their Scouts and Scouters to join in prayer on this Scout Sunday for our national leaders as they wrestle with this sensitive issue. I hope you join me and other great scouters in this effort!
If you would also take the time to give your input to our National Leaders, you can email them at feedback@scouting.org or visit the contact page at scouting.org at www.scouting.org/contactus or by calling (972)580-2000.
I believe this may be the most pivotal decision in the 103 year history of the BSA!
On my Honor, I will Do my Best to do my Duty to God... to keep myself... Morally Straight.
I also share a great talk by Elder Dallin Oaks: Truth and Tolerance.
Sincerely,
