In the last two weeks I have fasted a couple of times. I am so grateful for the miracles of healing, specialists, gifted hands that blessed our family last week! I began a fast on Wednesday evening, and kept fasting until Jed was operated on. So many miracles! This journey began while Brad and I were with Sam and Brinley in Wyoming on Trek with youth from our stake. That was an amazing experience. When we were done, we planned to meet Jed in SLC in the Draper temple for a sealing of Shun Li. We sent a text that we were on our way, and Jed called. He told us he had crashed the day before on his bike. He assured us that he was ok, just had a little road rash on his leg, a cut on his nose that Annie had glued for him. He said he was ok but a little stiff! He said that he didn't feel like he should be driving to Salt Lake and so he asked us to go to the ceremony for him, and meet him at home later. We said a prayer of gratitude for his safety and told him to take it easy and we would see him tomorrow morning as it would be late that night before we finally made it home.
We made our way home, stopped at the wedding reception, missed the ceremony because we had helped with some last jobs at the trek site that took us longer than what it was possible to make up to make it to the temple. It was good to see Shun Li, and he was happy to see us.
We made it home early the next morning, Jed was up with Liesl before the sun to prepare for events a the Washington Rec Center happening that day. He carried some 30 cases of water into the event and set up the photo booth. Miracles that these didn't paralyze him!
We caught up to him about noon, and found him stiff! We were there all day and I was worried about Jed so I asked Brad and his Dad Budd to give Jed a blessing in one of the offices at the Rec Center and then we sent Jed home to bed. He insisted that he was ok, but I was grateful to have him go lay down. He was really not moving well.
Sunday we had a baby blessing for Daniel's baby in town, but we didn't know about it until Budd got in town Saturday and called so Brad couldn't get out of meetings to be there. Jed and Annie came but Jed was uncomfortable sitting in the chair, and asked if it was alright if he went home. I agreed that he needed to heal and he left and then slept through our ward later that afternoon.

Monday morning, I called to get a follow up appointment for Sara's leg to be checked, and they said we could get in Tuesday. I asked if I could bring Jed and have his shoulder looked at while I was there. They agreed, but asked us to take him to their office in Washington because that was where Dr. Clark would be that day. Sara would be seeing an assistant but they wanted Jed to see the Doctor. I did too. So Tuesday, I marched those two kids into the Dr. offices. This photo above was of Jed that morning who insisted that his shoulder was healing and he was on the mend. I insisted that I wanted to see an x-ray and be sure. He told the nurse it was just his shoulder. Then Dr. Clark came in and heard his story and saw his Strava chart that showed that he was going 51+ miles per/hour down the canyon, and came immediately to a halt! He told about deciding that he would rather tumble over that sage brush than lock up the brakes and get road rash, and that he had crashed going really fast, but just sommer-saulted over the bushes, and he was ok. Dr. Clark told the nurse to take him back and get 4 more x-rays of his neck. He tested his strength, and it is significant that Jed said he had total movement in everything, except since the accident the top knuckle to the end of this first finger on his right hand had been numb. Dr. Clark took one look at the x-rays and said I don't like what I can see, but I can't see enough! You are going to go to the hospital right now and get a CT scan. He said he was worried, and to please drive very carefully! I drove him to the hospital.
In the meantime, Brad and Annie were supposed to be going to Mesquite to get some appliances from her Dad's house. Brad encouraged Annie not to go when we got the instructions to get a CT so she met us as the hospital. When we got done, with the CT we were waiting for it to be read, and these kids are living with Steve Davis right now - a radiologist at the hospital. They had told him that Jed had crashed, but since Jed had insisted on not being treated, he had checked in on him. When we got the CT Brad texted Steve and asked him to take a look at it. By the time we got back to the Washington office, Dr. Clark said Jed had a broken neck at C6 and C7 and he was lucky to be alive! He called Dr. Fox a neurosurgeon who we have since learned is nearly impossible to get into. Dr. Fox told Dr. Clark that he had a room waiting for him and to send him right over. We got to Dr. Fox's office back by the hospital and we were the only patients in the office. Dr. Fox immediately put a collar brace on Jed and told him he needed surgery! He said he had a "slipped facet" and
that he needed to be very careful! He explained that in this view of the CT that this line of bones, is supposed to line up perfectly along the inside corridor! As you can see at C6 it slipped way into that corridor! He went onto explain that Jed needed hardware like this plate with 4 screws. He said they would have to take out all the cartilage between the C6 and C7 bones and replace it with either a plastic piece like this one or with a piece of cadaver bone. This was still Tuesday afternoon.
Dr. Fox told us he wanted to see an MRI of his neck, and so we headed to the hospital again, hoping to get that before 5:00. When we got there they said it was too late, but they talked the technicians into coming in early for us, and Jed was told to be back there by 7:30 a.m. in the morning. Huge miracle that the staff would make such arrangements so he could be seen. Then Dr. Fox told us that to get all the paperwork approved and through, he would be surprised if he could operate before Monday. That was Wednesday morning. I started fasting Tuesday afternoon. Pleading for help, guidance and protect for my Jed! Thursday we were calling insurance, checking on hospital and Thursday afternoon the hospital called and said they thought they might could fit Jed into the operating schedule late Friday afternoon. We were feeling better. That evening, about close time, they called and said they had moved Jed up and that they wanted him to fast in the morning and be at the hospital for surgery at 12:30 noon. Yea! Then early Friday morning, 8:30 a.m., Jed called me and said the hospital had just called and asked him how quickly he could get there, the team was ready for him! :) Yea! We raced to the hospital and he was operated on that morning! Miracles! They took him in, and then said they would call us, expecting about 2 hours. Well, after an hour my phone rang and they said they had just barely gotten him stituated on the bed... because he was sooo tall they had to move him to a different kind of bed and it took 5 people to get him situated the way they wanted! Jed's anesthesiologist was Dr. Clark - lives in Pheasant Run! He said before surgery that they expected he could go home today because if there were any problems, Dr. Clark volunteered to come check on him and make sure he was ok! Dr. Clark said that he had the same surgery and has full motion in his neck! We had no fears going in. Brad even commented that I seemed very calm given the situation we were dealing with. I was still fasting, and totally know that they peace I felt was from my Father in Heaven! I am so grateful! It was more than 2 hours later, but not that I was worried, Dr. Fox came and found Annie, Marnie (Annie's Mom) and I in the waiting room. He reported that all had gone perfectly... or even better than expected! He had gone in through the front of Jed's neck. He was able to get all the cartiledge out and replaced it with a piece of cadaver bone. He said he was surprised but able to even unstack the bones, and instead
putting the brace on with the bones still in the unstable manner - stacked incorrectly, he was able to unstack them, and reposition them into the right order so they would sit correctly and then put the plate and screws in place. Yea! We are so blessed! It is hard to see in this photo of the photo but the facets are all lined up again in the correct manner! We celebrated! Jed came out of surgery, and is recovering! He has been told NOT to lift more than 15 lbs and to wear this brace for a while. We are not sure how long that will be the orders but we are grateful to be mending!
We are counting miracles and see them soo abundantly! Thank you Heavenly Father!
Love this quote on the power of fasting from Elder Joseph B. Worthlin:
“Fasting, coupled with mighty prayer, is powerful. It can fill our minds with the revelations of the Spirit. It can strengthen us against times of temptation. Fasting and prayer can help develop within us courage and confidence. They can strengthen our character and build self-restraint and discipline. Often when we fast, our righteous prayers and petitions have greater power. Testimonies grow. We mature spiritually and emotionally and sanctify our souls. Each time we fast, we gain a little more control over our worldly appetites and passions. … Fasting in the proper spirit and in the Lord’s way will energize us spiritually. It will strengthen our self-discipline, fill our homes with peace, lighten our hearts with joy, fortify us against temptation, prepare us for times of adversity, and open the windows of heaven” (Ensign, May 2001).
