The Purpose of Life

An image of two people walking through a rocky river, paired with a quote by Elder Brent H. Nielson: “All of us need the Savior’s Atonement.”
When I was young, I remember visiting the Church visitor center downtown and watching a movie called "Man's Search for Happiness." I didn't really understand what it was about that film that made me so intrigued, but I always came away with this sense of wonder at what life was really about. The movie depicted a couple at an amusement park. That is a place that our large family didn't get to go to very often, so I thought it looked so fun! The couple in the movie seem to be dating, and the gentleman wins trinkets for the girl he is there with, trying to impress her. The girl acts impressed, but through the course of the movie, something he wins drops, and the fleeting joy of this win is lost. I always came away from this movie grateful for the knowledge that life is more than the fleeting wins this world wants us to believe. I am so grateful for the Atonement of our Savior Jesus Christ. I love this thought from President Nelson:

"It is doctrinally incomplete to speak of the Lord’s atoning sacrifice by shortcut phrases, such as “the Atonement” or “the enabling power of the Atonement” or “applying the Atonement” or “being strengthened by the Atonement.” These expressions present a real risk of misdirecting faith by treating the event as if it had living existence and capabilities independent of our Heavenly Father and His Son, Jesus Christ." (Drawing the Power of Jesus Christ into Our Lives, President Russell M. Nelson, April 2017)

Often there are those who question why Church leaders focus so much on the topic of The Atonement of the Savior Jesus Christ. We think this life is more about the things we can accumulate, or the awards, recognitions, educational achievements, monetary successes, etc. This is so wrong!
Right now our world is in quarantine because of CoVid-19. What a blessing to come back to realize what is "essential services." What is "Essential?"  Really there is so little that we actually need. We need to realize completely that we rely on our Savior Jesus Christ! We can not control this virus. We can not heal the world. We can not control the weather, or the earthquakes, or the actions of others. Really, we are all here on earth to learn that we need to do all that we can on our own, but realize that ultimately we need our Savior Jesus Christ because none of us can get out of this life without His help!

Only through the Atonement of our Savior Jesus Christ can we overcome the disasters of this world, and overcome death of the moral body. We need Him. When He is our advocate, we can overcome death. We can be forgiven of our sins. We can conquer the opposition of this world. I am so grateful for our Savior Jesus Christ! I am grateful for His sacrifice for me. I am grateful to know that He will help me in every situation! I want to have His name written on my heart. I want to have His image in my countenance. I need Him.

Jesus Christ, The Son of God
